It’s been a busy, busy time since we returned to school after the Easter holidays.

We headed to Ballina for a day where the Senior Classes participated in a Famine Workshop. There they learned about the hardships faced by the tenant farmers and the efforts made by the political figures on their behalf. The junior pupils visited the library where they enjoyed browsing the shelves for books to read and they also experienced the new sensory room.

The whole school was invited to visit a traditional old house owned by the Swifts family. It was lovely to be able to walk up the road to it.  The pupils experienced what life was like one hundred years ago, they saw how bread was made on the open fire and got to taste the results.

Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth classes participated in a Gaelic Football Blitz which was held in Scarden, Sligo as part of Cumann na mBunscol. They played five matches in total. The boys team won both of their matches and are now through to the final. There were great celebrations on their return.

Taragh from the Edible Landscapes project visited us for an update on our school garden. With the help of the senior pupils the area was weeded, dug over and some new planting done. They planted some strawberry plants, chives and some fruit bushes. We are looking forward to tasting the fruits of their labours. 

Congratulations to our Second-class pupils who made their First Holy Communion in Castleconnor Church on the 11th May. As usual, the children were excellent. They all celebrated with their families afterwards. A party was held for them when they returned to school to acknowledge such an important occasion.

As part of the Art Cluster project, we have an artwork on loan from the Glucksman Gallery lending library based in UCC. The picture is created by author Mary Murphy and depicts a family of bears hard at work paw painting and relates to the theme of Family and Identity. It is displayed in our hall and we absolutely love it!
