As part of the Sligo Education Creative Cluster Art Group Initiative, Stokane NS were delighted to join Leaffoney NS, Kilglass NS, Rathlee NS and Killeenduff NS on Enniscrone Beach last Sunday.

We gathered on the beach just prior to sunset to showcase the Lantern Sculptures the pupils had created under the guidance of Tom Meskell. The event was inspired by the Legend of the Selkie, a mythical creature that resembles a seal in the sea but takes on a human form on land.

Between us we displayed eighteen Selkies, some Starfish and Jellyfish, a Lighthouse and hand-held lanterns.  A multitude of smaller jam jar lanterns created by the pupils were set in the sand to outline the area.  All the lanterns were lit and glowed beautifully on the beach as the sun set.

The pupils created a soundscape to the song “Amhran na Farráige” with rhythms, sounds and movement arranged and overseen by Rossa ó Snodaigh.

Family and friends joined us to celebrate the Legend of the Selkie and the beauty of the sea.

The weather was kind and an enjoyable evening was had by all.
