We were delighted to welcome Jonathan Ruane to the school last week.

Jonathan from Castleconnor made history by becoming the first person from Co Sligo to reach the the summit of Mount Everest on Monday 16th of May. He reached the peak summit at about 12.30am Irish time which was sunrise for him.

Jonathan is a lecturer and research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is home after his trip to Nepal. We were delighted that he made some time to come and visit our school.

Staff and pupils alike were fascinated to hear about his journey to the summit of Mount Everest. He brought his climbing kit with him to show us, including his boots, goggles, snow suit and ropes. He demonstrated the techniques used to climb and explained about how important it is to acclimatise to the mountain air.  The children were fascinated and he patiently answered many, many questions!

He met up with some of his cousins who are in school here and was presented with a card made and signed by the pupils in recognition of his achievements.

We really appreciate him coming to visit us and wish him all the best in his future expeditions.
